About Anglicans...

The Anglican tradition has often been described as a middle way between Protestant and Roman Catholic Christianity. Our Christian faith is founded in the Bible, the first four Ecumenical Councils (early meetings of the Church) and the early Church Fathers who had much to teach. We understand the Old and New Testaments of the Bible as containing all things necessary for salvation and as being the rule and ultimate standard of faith. We Anglicans also understand the Apostles’ Creed as the baptismal symbol, and the Nicene Creed as the sufficient statement of the Christian faith.

    The Anglican Church as we know it today has its roots in the English Reformation and is found all over the world today — the Anglican Communion is the third largest Christian communion in the world, after the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church.

     In Canadian Anglicanism, the local parish is the primary centre of worship and mission in the Church. Each parish is within one of 30 dioceses (we belong to the Diocese of Brandon), and functions under the jurisdiction of the diocesan Bishop (ours is Bishop Jim Njegovan).

    Each diocese is within one of four regional groupings known as an ecclesiastical province (our province is called ‘Rupert’s Land’). One Bishop holds the office of Metropolitan and the title of Archbishop (the Metropolitan of Rupert’s Land is Archbishop David Ashdown).

    Collectively, the dioceses created a national body, the General Synod, to act on their behalf in specified areas. Representatives of the dioceses come together every three years in a meeting of the General Synod. Between these meetings, an executive committee, called the Council of General Synod, implements the General Synod’s strategic plan. The Primate (Archbishop Fred Hiltz) is the chief pastor of the Anglican Church of Canada and President of the General Synod.

Didn’t catch all that?

Don’t worry about it — Anglicanism can be hard to grasp at first. The important things to know are these:

1)we’re Biblically-based catholic Christians that have our roots in the early Church teachings and in the Historic episcopate (that means we have Bishops that go right back to St. Peter);
2)we worship together because we know we need God the Holy Trinity (Father, Son & Holy Spirit) and we know we can’t go it alone;
3)we follow the Church calendar (Liturgical Year) to follow the life of Jesus and to commemorate the Saints of the Church;
4)we believe Jesus Christ is truly present in the Holy Communion (bread and wine given out on Sundays); and
5)we’d love for you to come worship with us!
