Organ Upgrade/Refurbishment Appeal
Dedicated to parishioners who died in war service, the three manual Casavant pipe organ is one of the glories of St. Matthew’s Cathedral, our Diocesan “Mother Church”. Installed in 1959 to replace a smaller Caron organ, it cost $38,420. Essentially unchanged for 54 years, the organ continues to play an important part in weekly worship services, and is regularly used for concerts, weddings and funerals, as well as for teaching.
With 2,217 pipes, the organ consists of five major sections — the Choir, the Great, the Swell, the Pedal and the Console. Despite regular maintenance it is overdue for a major refurbishment - all the sections need work, some more than others. In particular the Console, which contains some very out of date wiring, needs to be replaced.
We have received a quotation of $79,500 (before taxes) to have all the necessary work done: purchase and install a solid-state switching system, and repair several pipes and regulate/ revoice others. Following this work, the refurbished organ should last at least another 30 years.
So far, over $45,000 has been donated. We are now in the process of seeking funds from external sources such as foundations. Since our Cathedral is both a Diocesan and community resource, we also invite all friends of the Diocese and Cathedral to consider making a contribution. This can take many possible forms: a gift from an individual, a combined gift from a parish, company or other group entity, a one-time donation, a pledge for a given dollar amount a month for some specific period, a memorial gift. All contributions will be acknowledged and entered in a memorial book, gifts over $2,500 will be acknowledged by a permanent plaque, and any donation from a tax-paying individual or entity will receive a charitable donation receipt.
Please direct any enquiries to “St. Matthew’s Cathedral Organ Fund, 403-13th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 4P9”, or contact Chris Macdonald (Rector’s Warden) at email@example.com (tel. 204-725-3167). Contributions may be sent to “St. Matthew’s Anglican Cathedral, 403-13th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 4P9”, and cheques made out to “St. Matthew’s Cathedral” with the notation that it is for the “Organ Fund”.
