An explanation of the commentaries page

Unified commentaries

Most Sundays have two of these.

  1. The 'full' version comprises separate and quite lengthy analyses of (i) the OT lesson, (ii) the Psalm, (iii) the Epistle and (iv) the Gospel for the day. They are neither liberal nor conservative, just good theology. It's also far too heavy to incorporate even a single sentence into a sermon, but one would have to be very knowledgable (or the opposite), not to be able to find something of worth to pass on to one's congregation.
  2. The shorter version is a snapshot view of the OT, NT and Gospel readings by Tom Wright, former Canon Theologian at Westminster Abbey, now Bishop of Durham. He is firmly evangelical, but is also the master of the pithy phrase.

Other Commentaries

There is always a commentary on the gospel for the day, nearly always one of which is by William Barclay. This is usually backed up by an excerpt from a slightly more scholarly commentary, and there are occasionally commentaries on the other readings.

Simple Sermon Outlines

Don't take this the wrong way, but at the conclusion of your Sunday round, the three very elderly people waiting patiently for you in a tiny church way out in the boonies may not appreciate the masterly address on the intricacies of Form Criticism or Realised Eschatology that you delivered to a rapturous and packed church that morning. These simple sermon outlines are at times (to me) woefully simplistic, moralising and you-name-it, but our Lord's command "feed my sheep" means presumably give them the nourishment they can take, not our favourite confection of Pâté de Foie Gras.

Saints' Days

Several saints' days will have been ‘translated’ to another date a day or two back or forward, especially if they fall on a Sunday. Only the traditional dates are shown, so please consult your lectionary for changes.
